Default MS Project Links to Excel

I have a WinXP Pro PC with SP1, MS Project 2002 & MS Office 2002.
I put links in the notes of a Project to specific cells of an Excel spreadsheet.
If I open the project and reply that I do not want to have the links updated it works fine and it can even follow the links.
If I open the project and reply that I want the links to be updated, it freezes as project takes 100% of the CPU time.

Please let me know if there is a way arround this.
