email merge

i'm following your steps but when I click new string, it says cannot create
value. error writing to the registry..

....it is possible that you do not have permission to update this particular
part of the regiistry, e.g. if you are not logged in with Administrator
permissions. That would be quite likely if your machine is on a network and
maintained by someone else - in that case you would need to contact them and
ask them to sort this out for you.

what I have in these files. In the windows messaging subsystem folder, on
the right-hand side of the window, there are (default) REG_5Z (value not set)
and InstallCmd REG_5Z rundll32 setupap,Install-in/Section MSMAIL 132
msmail.inf

Back on the left-hand side of the window, under the windows messaging
subsystem there is a MSMapiApps. If I click on that, on the right-hand side
of the window it has (default) REG_5Z (value not set), choosusr.dll REG_5Z,
inetsw95.exe REG_5Z, and MAP1 REG_5Z

Your directions say (I'm on letter G and H in your directions) to name as
above . What name? and what value?

What name?

I mean the names and values as in step (b):

Yes, select the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem

Then, to insert the MAPIX value (for example)
a. Right-click and slect New|String value. A new REG_SZ value is created
with name "New Value #1"
b. You should be able to overtype the name with MAPIX (unless you have
already created that value
c. Double-click the MAPIX value. A dialog box appears
d. type the value you need, in this case 1, and click OK.
e. You should see a line under "Windows Messaging Subsystem" with something
like

MAPIX REG_SZ 1

If you are uncertain because you have done all that and the merge to e-mail
options are still greyed out, then something else is probably wrong (and in
that case, I do not know what it might be).

(a) the REG_5Z are actually REG_SZ.
(b) The capitalisation of OLEmessaging should be OLEMessaging (capital M)
but I doubt if that makes any difference
(c) My InstallCmd shows

InstallCmd REG_SZ rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132
msmail.inf

In other words, it is "setupapi" rather than "setupap", and
"InstallHinfSection" rather than "Install-in/Section"

However, the InstallCmd value is the one that most likely needs to vary from
system to system.

I would be surprised if it was not there in recent versions
of
Windows,
but if it is not, add it.

If it is there, I would expect to see
a. A subkey called MSMapiApps
b. A number of "values" with the same names as are in the
above
list -
MAPI, MAPIX etc.
c. An additional value called InstallCmd

If you cannot see the values, you need to add them. For
each
of
the
values in the above list
d. Right click "Windows Messaging Subsystem" and select
New|String
Value.

Note that although some of these items have numeric values,
they
should
all
be entered as String Values.
e. Enter the name, as above
f. Double click on the name. A dialog box appears. Enter
the
value
(e.g.
for the name CMCDLLNAME, enter mapi.dll) and click OK
g. You may also need to create the InstallCmd value,
although
I
rather
doubt it. I am less sure about this and about what should
go
in
there.
On
my system, the value is:
rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132 msmail.inf

When you have done them all, press F5. Then close all
copies
of
Word
and
restart it - or restart Windows, then restart Word and see
if
the
e-mail
option has appeared.
