Global change to symbol

i'd like to modify a pc symbol and be able to change the 1st instance and
have the change auto-apply to every instance of the symbol.

can someone provide a simple 1-2-3 step example? i'm confused by all the
different terms like masters, etc.

I had an (almost) similar problem, and it seems hard to do.
