Default A template with a mind of its own

I am in Word 2002 with a document incorporating numbered paragraphs from
heading levels 1 through 4, for which I used the List Styles tab in the
Numbering dialog. I want all of the heading numbers aligned flush left.
Regardless of how many times I change the paragraph dialog to reflect this,
and answer "yes" when the system asks whether I want to save the template
changes, when next I open the document the heading levels are again indented,
each one farther right than the other. How do I get the template to align the
numbered paragraphs the way I want them?

Hi Wallace

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're doing, but bear in mind the
following.

Are you editing the template or the document? If you change a template, the
changes do *not* ripple through to existing documents based on that
template. For more information on that, see
What is the relationship between a Word document and its template?
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/temp...ons\index.html

If you change the paragraph indents (through Format Paragraph) for a
numbered paragraph, or modify the paragraph indents for a numbered style,
Word will ignore you. Indents for numbered paragraphs or styles are
controlled through the numbering scheme, not the paragraph formatting.

In the document and template, make sure that the box at Tools Templates
and Add-ins "Automatically update styles" is *not* ticked.

Finally, for a step by step way to set up heading numbering, see
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document

Hope this helps.
