Disabling FINDFAST.EXE ?
My Outlook 97 has stopped functioning properly. I'm trying to reinstall
Office 97 (& Outlook) using my CD, but I get a message, "Setup could not open the file: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE'. It is in use by another application". I have no other applications open! In my Windows Task Manager, however, I note that "FINDFAST.EXE" is a process apparently running in the background. If I start to end the process (to try to successfully reinstall Office 97), I get a pretty scary message about undesired results of stopping "FINDFAST.EXE". I want to know if I can stop it to reinstall and will it "restart" when I reboot? |

Disabling FINDFAST.EXE ?
Andy44, Yes you can stop this process (FindFast.exe) and it will start again when you next reboot the system. Actually, I don't have that process starting and yet my PC is working fine as far as I can tell. I am using XP Professional SP2. hth Andy44 wrote: My Outlook 97 has stopped functioning properly. Disabling FINDFAST.EXE ?
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=158705 "OFF97: How to
Disable the Find Fast Indexer". When you uninstall and reinstall Office 97, FindFast should be re-enabled automatically. Andy44 wrote: My Outlook 97 has stopped functioning properly. Disabling FINDFAST.EXE ?
The MS website was helpful. It states, however, that it applies to Office 97
Standard Edition. I'm running Office 97 Professional Edition. I assume this still applies, but am not sure. Thanks. Hihi, yes As far as remember findfast puts 4 files in the root, assuming root is c:\ , look there and you'll find 4 files with something like 'ffast' in it. Remove these 4 files and you'll be free of unwanted PC activity-on-a-regular-basis ;-) Henk Jol |

Dag Henk,
Many thanks! I'll give it a try. We lived in Voorschoten in 1976/77 and in Den Haag in 1999-2002! Regards, "Henk Jol" wrote: Andy44 schreef: The MS website was helpful. Disabling FINDFAST.EXE ?
We now live in Montgomery, Texas, about 80 km north of Houston. When we were
in Voorschoten, American School was in several different places (split by grades) in Scheveningen & Den Haag. I believe the British School is now in Voorschoten. Love Delft!
