Outlook Express Email Attachments
Windows XP Media Edition
Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 8 Outlook Express 6 (set to allow opening of attachments) AVG Anti Virus (set to allow attachments) I am having an issue with receiving Ecel and Word attachments with Outlook Express. There is no paperclip in the top right corner to click on, so most fixes I have read about do not work. I know the attachment is someplace in the message as the size of the received message matches the size of the message when I sent it. Which leads me to the questions: Is it an Outlook Express issue? MY home IP provider issue (I receive other attachments from other people) My work IP provider? When I double click the message, and go to File/Properties, Details tab, then click Message Source, and scroll down, there is a mile of gobeldy gook added below the message body. Thanks for any help or tips. Jim |

I can send Excel and Word attachments from Home (where I have the issue with
OE) to work (Outlook) no problem. It is from work to home I am having the issue. 1. Disable or uninstall AVG's email scanning component. It provides no
additional protection, it may be causing this problem, and even Symantec says it's not necessary: QP Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. /QP http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm 2. If the Sender is using MS Outlook (not MS Outlook Express), ask him to send messages to you only in Plain Text format, especially if there's an attachment. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Jim in Canada wrote: Windows XP Media Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 8 Outlook Express 6 (set to allow opening of attachments) AVG Anti Virus (set to allow attachments) I am having an issue with receiving Ecel and Word attachments with Outlook Express. Uninstalled AVG.
Uninstalled Spybot Uninstalled Adaware Forwarded (Is that a word?) An email on my Blackberry with an Excel attachment, and it came through Installed our internet provider's version of F-Secure, and it still works. So far so good. I double checked the Message Sourse again and the same gobly gook is there, but now the attachment icon is available. Jim "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: 1. You did, in the case of "(uninstalling" the component" which many people took to mean AVG since it was vague. If you meant to uninstall the email scanning component, that's what you should have said. The devil's in the details as someone here used to say. Is the sender of the message where the attachment was missing using MS Outlook, Jim? How is that relevant? Outlook Express Email Attachments
If messages are sent using the Exchange family of mail programs
(includes Windows Messaging or Outlook97/98/2000+) and the option to use Rich Text Format is selected, it puts the RTF message (and any attached files) in an attachment called WINMAIL.DAT (application/ms-tnef). But this attachment is useless to most other mail programs. In some mail programs (e.g. Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail), the attachment won't even be visible. The Exchange user can turn off the RTF option for messages to selected recipients. Note that if sending via an Exchange server, the Exchange server administrator may be overriding the mail client settings. In this case, the administrator will need to make changes on the server. In some cases, the Exchange server actually removes the attachments to some recipients. For additional information, see the MS-TNEF WINMAIL.DAT Attachments section of Decoding Internet Attachments - A Tutorial http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...de.htm#ms-tnef At the above link is information on several utilities that can be used to recover the attachment if the sender can't or won't resend it in plain text (or HTML) mode. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Jim in Canada" wrote in message ... That's good information Michael! Thanks much!!
I'm so used to seeing rtf/html as though it didn't matter which that I never thought about the Exchange Server actions. Great catch, IMO. Learned something todayg! Well written paper, BTW.
