"Look In" file list quits responding
Everytime I go to open a file in excel or work through the fileopen and
click on the down arrow for the "look in" list to get my file listing, the whole program quits responding. Any ideas? |

I'm trying to fix the same problem on a Windows XP Pro sp2 machine running Office XP Pro. This problem showed up on a user's computer 4 days ago. I got the computer yesterday and haven't found the fix for the problem yet. Trying to browse a subfolder from the open dialog box of any Office XP application will lock up Office. Using the open dialog box of any other program on the computer works fine. Does anyone know what dll Office uses for it's open dialog box? I would like to figure out this problem before it starts showing up all over our network. -- Daniel Blake Milford Central School |

Cary Frisch just posted a possible answer in a different thread. Here is the link to the Microsoft Security Response Center Blog. http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archiv...18/425473.aspx The blog references KB article 918165. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us The lowdown is this. A small percentage of users might run into this problem if they have an older NVIDIA video card driver or Hewlett Packard˙s ´Share-to-webˇ software installed. Updating the video driver fixes the problem. I have found infact that this computer has the Share-to-web software installed. I haven't found how to uninstall it yet, nor does there seem to be a free update to the newest version which is now called ´HP Image Zone Version 5ˇ I will probably uninstall all HP software from this computer to see what it gets uninstalled with. Then I will reinstall software with the custom option to try and install the software without share-to-web. Hope this helps. -- Daniel Blake Milford Central School |

Read this first and see if it's the cause.
You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us Daniel Blake wrote: On Fri, 21 Apr 2006 05:41:02 -0700, janice.brown wrote: Everytime I go to open a file in excel or work through the fileopen and click on the down arrow for the "look in" list to get my file listing, the whole program quits responding. "Look In" file list quits responding
Janice,
I have the same problem with all the Office 2003 applications. Each time I click the drop down arrow in the Look in box to open a file, the applications quit responding. It also happens in Outlook when I try to insert a file attachment and in Internet Explorer when I try to select a recently visited we address. I tried running the repair option with my original Office installations disks in addition to uninstalling and reinstalling both FrontPage and Word. I also tried installing the Office Service Pack 2. The problem still persists. I am considering uninstalling the entire Office 2003 suite and reinstalling to see if I can correct this problem. Daniel suggests in his response that it may have something to do with HP software. I don't have any HP software installed on my PC; it is a Dell. I would appreciate any suggestions to correct this problem. Any ideas? Having an HP scanner or printer could also install the Share-to-web software. If that is not the case, it is also possible your Dell has an NVIDIA video card that the driver needs to be updated. I would suggest going to the Windows Update website. Choosing Custom instead of Express. On the left you will see Select by Type. Hardware, Optional is one of the choices. If there are any updates there, install them and see if that corrects the problem. Hope this helps. -- Daniel Blake Milford Central School |
