Default OE 6 Problem w/ address book and fw messages

2 issues:

Address Book--For some reason, I can no longer view my contacts. It's not
that I don't have it checked on the "view" list. They still auto-fill when
I'm composing a message, and I can view them when I select it from the
"tools" menu, but they don't appear in the lower right corner. Just an empty
box that says "they're no contacts to view". I've looked through every
setting I can think of and can't seem to find anything I might have switched.

Fowarded Messages--I can view any and all attachment just fine, except for a
forwarded message. The .eml file type is no longer recognized, and I can't
assign OE to open it (even by selecting it from the list). I did install
Mozilla Thunderbird on a friend's recommendation as a better email program,
but subsequently removed it after I realized I wasn't too fond of it. When I
went back to OE, that's when I noticed the problem (FYI the address book
problem above was prior to installing that software). I've tried to fix the
registry but it was to no avail, and I tried reinstalling IE 7 completely but
that didn't work either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for the response. That makes sense for the issue with
the address book, I'll try cleaning some out.

On the .eml issue, there is no extension even listed. Should I create a new
one?

EML needs OE to open.

Save the attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With. Find and
choose a program, (In this case, Outlook Express), that works and then check
the box: Always use this program to open this kind of file. This should
enable you to open these attachments in the future.

If they are from an AOL or Compuserve user, (some other servers are changing
too), they may be layered as many times as it has been forwarded. When you
open an attachment and only see a blank page, keep putting the cursor on the
text in the attachment line / Right click / Open. Keep doing this and you'll
eventually get to the original attachment and be able to view it.

You can also highlight the message header and press Ctrl & F3 to just read
the text of the message.

Default OE 6 Problem w/ address book and fw messages

I'm aware of forwarded messages being layered (this one in particular is from
yahoo). I had tried saving the file to the desktop earlier and opening with
OE (which I have to "browse" for), but nothing happens period.

I've also unchecked the option to "hide extensions of known file types" and
restarted the computer, but nothing changed. Any other thoughts?

Try re-registering OE. Close all OE windows and verify that msimn.exe
is no longer an active process in Task Manager's Processes tab.
Then Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and enter:

msimn.exe /reg

Note: there is no feedback from the command.

If you want to check on your FileType associations for this problem
open a cmd window and enter:

assoc .eml

and then

ftype | find /i "mail"

FWIW when I do that I get:

example
F:\assoc .eml
..eml=Microsoft Internet Mail Message

F:\ftype | find /i "mail"
mailto="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1
Microsoft Internet Mail Message="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

/example

My guess is that uninstalling Thunderbird left the association empty.
E.g. its uninstall didn't restore the previous association which is why
re-registering OE is now necessary.

Good luck
