Default Page Number Problem

I have a document in which I want to begin numbering pages on the fourth
page--and have that page designated as Page 1. I don't want any page
numbers on the first three pages. This seems simple enough, but I can't
make it work (with Word 2007). I know this can be done because even the
help files tell me how to do it. But it doesn't work. If I go to page 4
and insert page number then format page number, I select "1" and the
document jumps to the cover (which I don't want numbered) and numbers
everything sequentially from there on. The fourth page, which I want to be
page 1, says page 4. I grew up on earlier versions of Word and am still
getting used to the new one, but somehow either I am missing something or
there is a bug in the software.

Default Page Number Problem

Hi Bob,

At the end of Page 3, insert a 'Next Page' Section break (via Page Layout|Breaks).
Then access the header of page 4 and click on 'Link to previous', to cancel the current 'Link to previous' setting.
Now you can insert your page # field, formatted to start as page #1.

Default Page Number Problem

Hi Bob,

The key thing you appear to be missing is the instruction to insert a Next Page
section break between the third and fourth pages. Then you can change the
starting page number for the second section which starts on the fourth page.

Another step you'll need is to uncheck the Link to Previous box for the header
or footer where you'll place the page numbers for section 2, so the page numbers
won't appear in section 1.

The correct set of instructions is in the "Insert or remove page numbers" help
topic, in the "Start numbering after the second page" part of the "Control where
page numbering starts" subtopic. You can find it through the F1 help or online
at
http://office.microsoft.com/client/h... &lcid=1033#4

Note: if you swap the order of steps 5 and 6 in that procedure (turn off the
Link to Previous box before editing the header or footer) then you don't need
step 8.

Thanks, that did it. But I sure don't see anything about section breaks in
the "insert page number" section of the Word help file!
