Default word 2003 documents suddenly become read-only`

Can someone help me? I would like to know how to turn off the read-only
function.

I am a writer working on a story that is now 40 pages long. I can work and
save changes normally, but after a while I go to save the thing and find the
computer has suddenly changed it to read-only! I could continue to 'save as'
and create and delete multiple versions, but it seems like a defect somewhere.

Thank you

Joe

Are you saving to the local HDD and is it in normal .doc format? Which
version of Word.
