Default charts changed from 2003 to 2007

I recently moved from 2003 to 2007. Now when I first create a chart it
looks very different to what it did in 2003. Eg background colour,
line weight, placement etc. Now I know I can make and use a chart
template of my own, but that seems to be only applicable to a single
chart type and also I have to apply it each time. Is there any way to
change the basic MS defaults?

0. Save your chart as a template.
1. Select the chart and choose ChartTools, Design, Change Chart Type, and
pick Templates.
2. Click the Set as Default Chart button at the bottom

That helps, but it doesn't really do what I wanted.
The biggest pain is line point size
I do a lot of technical line and x-y line charts with many variables.
Excel 2003 by default set them to 1pt, 2007 sets them to 2.5pt which
is too clunky and its then not possible to see the detail
If I set a template as default with a couple of lines and then use
more lines in an actual chart then the extra lines are still 2.5pt.
Also, its only that particular chart style which is affected.
I guess I could make a template for each of the four line and x-y
charts with a maximal number of data sets.
Would that work?
But I wondered if there was some underlying setting somewhere for
this.
It seems a strange and arbitary change for Microsoft to have made.

I made a smoothed line x-y scatter chart with 24 data sets, I
laboriously set each line to 1pt, saved it as a template and set it
as default.
Then I created a new chart with just 12 data sets and it came up with
all the lines as 2.5pt.
If I change chart type to that of the template then they do go to 1pt.
Then I went back and made another chart using the original 24 data
sets and it came up as 2.5pt again
Again changing to use my template set it to 1pt.
I've tried setting it as default several times and I can't make it
work
does anyone have any clues on what might be wrong
