Word 2007-Footnotes left behind when text is moved

I expect to have a large number of footnotes in a document I am creating. I
also expect to be cutting and pasting text frequently as it takes shape.
After writing a few pages and adding footnotes, I discovered that the
footnotes are left behind, and seem completely uncoupled from the text. Is
there any way to move text and bring the footnotes along with it? Thanks.

You are making the footnotes using the References Insert Footnote
command, aren't you?

And if you move a sentence that ends with a footnote, you are careful
to select the note reference number, aren't you?

To the second question, I guess I am not clear what it means to be "careful
to select the note reference number" . What I did do was to simply highlight
the area of text that included the footnotes, cut it with ctrl-x, and paste
it with ctrl-v. I thought the footnotes linked to that text would be dragged
along with it, but that did not happen. I expect there is a way to avoid
manually updating the footnotes upon future moves.

What you are doing should give the results you expect. Are you tracking

In that case the footnotes would get copied, but the count would be
doubled rather than ignored.

By being careful to select the note number, I meant that if your
footnote appears after the period at the end of a sentence (American-
style), then if you selected a sentence by, say, Ctrl-click, the
selection would only go up to and including the period but wouldn't
extend the further character to the note number.

Hmm. I have been moving text around without this problem arising again, but
obviously it happened once because otherwise I would not have had to relink
all the footnote text to the main text text. If it happens again, I will try
to figure out what was different and post again to this thread.
