PowerPoint 2003 crashes within seconds of opening a file
In the last four days, I have tried to open several PowerPoint 2003 files
that I've been working on recently. Some of them come up with a message something like "this file caused a serious error last time you opened it." If I try to open the file, PowerPoint just shuts off (no error message or anything). If I try to open another file, PowerPoint opens the file, but then shuts off within a few seconds. I've uninstalled and re-installed PowerPoint and it still does the same thing, even when the corrupted file has not been opened since the re-install. Please help...I'm desperate! |

PowerPoint 2003 crashes within seconds of opening a file
Does this happen with new, blank presentations also?
And the error message...could you give us the exact text? I'm asking because I've seen stuff about PowerPoint experiencing a serious error (can't give you the exact error message there because it's not experiencing these crashes right now, lol) and offering to try to recover the file, but I don't recall seeing any that pinpoint a specific presentation like that. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/powerpointannoy/ "Janet C." wrote in message ... PowerPoint 2003 crashes within seconds of opening a file
PowerPoint just shutting down seems to happen with any file (but not
always....sigh). The error message for the specific corrupted file (I assume it's corrupted) says: "The document 'XXXX.ppt' caused a serious error lthe last time it was opened. Would you like to continute opening it?" Doesn't matter if I do or not...ppt just stops. "Echo S" wrote: Does this happen with new, blank presentations also? PowerPoint 2003 crashes within seconds of opening a file
Thank you, that's very helpful.
I think the problem may be an add-in, or even a couple of conflicting add-ins. Please run the code and/or utility listed at this FAQ http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00655.htm and post the list of what is loaded. We may be able to pinpoint likely suspects. Once you disable or uninstall those, PPT will probably be okay again. Oh, you might also try deleting your *.PCB file. (Do this when PPT is closed.) This is your PPT toolbar, and PPT will recreate it the next time you start it. You'll lose any customizations you may have made. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/powerpointannoy/ "Janet C." wrote in message ... PowerPoint 2003 crashes within seconds of opening a file
Mmmm, nothing specific jumps out at me. I think I'd try the toolbar thing
first, and if that doesn't work, I'd uninstall the Acrobat, Point-Cast and Snag-It add-ins all three. The Microsoft PowerPoint Presenter Tools actually come with PowerPoint, so they aren't a problem. If PPT starts up as expected after you uninstall those three, you can reinstall each of them one at a time to see if you can pinpoint the problem. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/powerpointannoy/ "Janet C." wrote in message ... Thanks! PointeCast Publisher seems to have been the problem. Uninstalling it
worked. "Echo S" wrote: Mmmm, nothing specific jumps out at me. I think I'd try the toolbar thing first, and if that doesn't work, I'd uninstall the Acrobat, Point-Cast and Snag-It add-ins all three. PowerPoint 2003 crashes within seconds of opening a file
Glad to hear you got it resolved!
I'd guess it's actually a conflict as the add-ins load, otherwise we probably would hear many more complaints about PointeCast specifically -- and we don't. I don't quite have a handle on the details, but I think it may have something to do with some DLL being named the same. If you can update SnagIt or PointeCast, you might want to do that, as that may allow you to run them at the same time with no conflicts. (I don't mean spend money to upgrade -- I mean just check for updates.) -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/powerpointannoy/ "Janet C." wrote in message news Thanks!
