Default Change video format of personal DVD

I have a DVD copied from a home VHS tape. It is in mpg format. How do I
change the format so it works properly and easily in Power Point. I will need
to insert it into a slide in the middle of the presentation and it starts
when I key to next slide, stops automatical, and then I can click donw for
thenext still slide?
