Default Renaming files in Windows Explorer

I run Windows XP and have a number of file names that share 3 letters. I
would like to change these 3 letters to something else that would be common
again for these files and would like to do it in one fell swoop, rather than
one file at a time. Can this be done?

Thanks

Maureen

In a word - no.

Each file has to be treated exclusively. It is not possible to actively
engage with more than one file at a time. Whenever you move from one to
another, you will notice the blue title bar will grey out. This is for the
same reason.

However, you can speed thing up just a little by typing the relevant letters
into Notepad and copying them. You can then select "Rename" in the usual way
and then paste over the redundant letters rather than having to type them in
each time.

Hope this helps.

Not with Explorer, but you could do this from a console (DOS) prompt
using the rename (or ren) command. For example,

ren abc*.doc xyz*.doc
