I have a workbook which pulls all the information from 5 external workbooks
containing staff timesheets. The problem is that if the staff names change I have to manually go into the 5 workbooks and change the names. What I want to do is in the link the 5 workbooks to the names column in the totals workbook - so when I change the name in the totals workbook all 5 of the other workbooks are changed. However when I make the link I get a ZERO instead of the persons name. It seems I cannot link text from another workbook only numbers. So the question is : HOW DO I LINK TEXT FROM ANOTHER WORKBOOK? Cheers Craig |

Yes you can only link cells between books but you can do it with a formula - then you only have to change one book. e.g in book2 try =[Book1]Sheet2!$A$2 You might like to have a list of numbers for each employee to reduce the likeyhood of error. ..... However when I make the link I get a ZERO instead of the persons name. Just wondering whether calculation mode is set at "manual" ? What happens when you press F9, does the link update the person's name ? To check / change the calculation mode: Click Tools Options Calculation tab Check "Automatic" OK Think the calculation mode is set by the first excel book opened in the Excel session. If the first book opened has "manual" setting for calculation mode, all subsequent books opened during the same Excel session will be at "manual" calc, irrespective of their own calc mode. -- hth Max ----------------------------------------- Please reply in thread Use xdemechanik atyahoodotcom for email -------------------------------------------------------- |
