Default Footnotes - keeping on same line...

Any way to add new footnotes to the end of the current line instead of
creating a new line? For example, change this:

[1] Cicero, The Republic, III.13.23.
[2] Ibid.
[3] Ibid., III.25.37.

to this:

[1] Cicero, The Republic, III.13.23.; [2] Ibid.; [3] Ibid., III.25.37.

You can do it, but you won't gain anything. If you set tab stops at
appropriate locations on the line, you can format the paragraph marks of the
first two footnotes as Hidden, then insert tab characters for placement of
the succeeding notes. Unfortunately, you'll see that Word still leaves
enough space for three lines of footnotes even though you have them on one
line. Sorry.

I think at various times this feature may have been requested, but it's the
sort of thing that would require so much furious paddling below the surface
(to recalculate pagination) that it's not feasible.
