outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (smtp) e-mail server
Brian, No, I did not check the box for authentication for the outgoing
server, per instructions from my ISP tech support. Thanks for your interest in my problem. "Brian Tillman [MVP - Outlook]" wrote: "Dogie D" Dogie wrote in message ... I am having the same problem, but only when I travel and use wi fi. My ISP tech support cannot help either. I have tried all the solutions offered here as of Jan 23, 2009 and none worked. I have also tried inserting the Outgoing SMTP from the local office that supplies the wi fi. That didn't work either. I need to continue to use Outlook as it has all my addresses connected. I am with Nemont.net in Montana. Do you authenticate to the outgoing server? -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

When you are using a network other than that of your mail service provider, you must either authenticate to the outgoing server or you must use the SMTP server of the network to which you're connected. Most mail providers require that you be using their network in order to use the SMTP server with no authentication. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server
This is just a note for those who got the test email to work but the emails
stayed stuck in their outbox. When this happened to me the changes to port 587 and authentication were not sticking. I was trying to change multiple email accounts at once and the changes only stuck with the last one done. When I went from Tools to Finish for each email account everthing started working again. "rulark" wrote: Re mail not sending in Outlook 2003 and getting stuck in outbox, with error message "outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server": I have Comcast. I tried switching the port from 25 to 587 after reading the comments below and it worked! Thanks! Here's what I did: Tools (up on the File menu bar) - e-mail accounts - view or change existing e-mail accounts - double-click on mail.comcast.net - click More settings - go to the Advanced tab - change the Outgoing server (SMTP)from 25 to 587 (type it in)- OK - next - finish Good luck if this happens to you. |

outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (smtp) e-mail server

... I am having the same error message: Ox80042109 - Outlook cannot connet to your outgoing .... My outlook 07 advanced settings were, from initial setup, Outgoing server (SMTP) 587. My ISP service walked me through the setup and that's what they gave me. The problem lasted for several hours, then presto chango, it just went away. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? Given the symptoms you describe, there's a good chance it was a server-side problem. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (smtp) e-mail server
Hi,
I use COX and finally called them. My problem as OUTLOOK kept asking for my password. He said that passwords can become corrupt. All I had to do was change my COX e-mail password, then change it in outlook and WA LA!!! I have mail again! Hope this helps someone because I was at my wits ends searching all over for something. I told him he should put this on their site because who would have thought it would be something as simple as this. Have a great day! Susan |

Task 'TDB - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' I had this same problem and was able to fix it by changing "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" from 25 to 26. |

... I had this same problem and was able to fix it by changing "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" from 25 to 26. That would be highly unusual. The typical alternate SMTP ports are 465 (SMTP over SSL) and 587. Port 26 is usually reserved for RSFTP. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' Do you have comcast cable internet? If so, they (and probably other ISPs) block your outgoing mail port (typically 25) they recommend you switch it to 587 but that never works either. The only solution I have found is to use their SMTP server but that limits your relays per day. If you have Yahoo DSL (at&t SBC or whoever they are now) you can request them to unblock it. I beat my head against the wall for hours on this one until i figured out that they do this. It's wrong. It is not wrong. Port 25 is designated by RFC 2821 for "Mail Transfer". Unless you are running a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA; aka, "mail server"), don't *need* access to port 25. Since 1996, RFC 2476 designates port 587 for "Message Submission". If you are using a "Message Submission Agente" (MSA; aka, "MS Outlook Express", "Mozilla Thunderbird", or the like), you don't need to use a "mail transfer port", but you do need to use a "message submission port". Comcast makes either port 587, or port 465 (w/SSL) available. AT&T (at&t Yahoo! HSI) makes port 587 available on their legacy SMTP AUTH servers; port 465 (w/SSL) on the Yahoo! servers ('smtp.att.yahoo.com'). Other common email service providers have followed suit. I have not needed to use port 25 for two, or three years, now. And I use SMTP with Gmail, GMX Mail, AOL Mail, Yahoo! Mail, and others. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum I have Time Warner Roadrunner as my internet provider. When I am connected directly to Roadrunner (wireless) in my home, I can send email. However, when I am connected to another internet provider, I cannot send email. I do recieve. I spent over an hour on the phone with Time Warner. They had me try the 587 port, but it did not help. They were unable to help. I had written several emails that remained stuck in my Outbox. Once I arrived home and reconnect to my Time Warner roadrunner account, the emails automatically sent. Do you have any advice on how to send emails while connected to a third party internet provider?
