Default Trying to copy and paste line of text into multiple cells

I have a text file that has sports pointspread data, and i need to
just simply copy a line of characters such as:

L -15' 17-14 u44

...and then make sure they go in four columns (as i highlight the
columns before entering) . But when i try doing this, i get the
message saying
"Data is not the same size as the selected area" and just puts it all
in one cell

????

Select just one cell in the target range; Excel will look after the rest
