Default Slow response of "File-New" function

Office 2003
All users of our "Workgroup" are being held up for an inordinate amount of time whenever they
use the "File-New", "On My Computer" function in Excel.
Whenever they have to select "On my computer" they can pretty well go for coffee before it
brings them the tabs with the templates (the tabs organize the templates by department).
There isn't any problem selecting from the MRU list but, unfortunately, the list is not long
enough to accommodate all the templates they require.

Can anyone offer any hints as to what factors influence the response time?
