Security Update for Outlook Express released 11 May 2010
Bingo! Give the man a cigar!

Were OE or Windows Live Mail open, when I installed KB978542 on
the laptop? - Not sure, so the answer is a definite Maybe. I am pretty sure that OE and WLMail were not open on the desktop, so you have probably identified a likely cause. For the future, I will make sure that OE6 and WLMail are closed, before I allow Windows Update to install updates. I will also close IE8, if it doesn't prevent the Windows Update from installing. Security Update for Outlook Express released 11 May 2010
I close all programs before doing any updates (I'm configured to be
notified; I go to Microsoft Update myself). I have three computers running WinXP fully updated. Here's what happened with the latest update: desktop computer, XP Home, needed to restart laptop computer, XP Pro, needed to restart netbook, XP Home, didn't need to restart Jo-Anne "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... If you'd closed OE before installing the update, a reboot wouldn't be required. spamlet wrote: Cheers: Now all I need is a way to stop it telling me I need to restart my computer every 5 minutes! ;-) S "Richard in AZ" wrote in message ... For the future, I will make sure that OE6 and WLMail are closed,
before I allow Windows Update to install updates. You might add IE to that list. NB: If it's a Security Update for Windows, chances are a reboot will be required. Security Update for Outlook Express released 11 May 2010
Windows Update always /assumes/ you'll be ready, willing & able to reboot
after installing an update, if a reboot is in fact required. If you've Approved the install (or download & install) of an update, you've implicitly told Windows Update that you'll be ready, willing & able to reboot after installing the update. spamlet wrote: This is all missing the point that Windows tells you that you can go on working while the update is being performed: it does not say 'oh but you mustn't use x y or z.' By which you mean anyone dumb enough to believe the pointless and misleading
pop up information provided by MS. MS clearly does not assume anything of the sort or it would not need any pop ups at all. Seems I'm dealing with trolls after all. That hooplehead is very well known in OE & IE newsgroups. Unfortunately,
(s)he's also one which I've continue to indulge for some reason or other. I must be entering my dotage. As it happens, I did see the very great Mott many times;
No doubt while you guys were spending all your time arguing the finer points of stereo systems and not actually listening to anything.
