Problem with Tools/Option/Maintenace tab
That is a new one for me. The value is set in the registry, but it is not
anything you should need to touch. Do a manual compacting of your folders, reboot and see if it works now. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Compact Your OE Folders: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact If you still see this problem, try a new identity and see if that resolves it. You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it. See Bruce's next reply.
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed WinXP SP3 and/or IE7? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Bill Olsen wrote: XP Home Edition wit SP3, OE 6 [...also have IE7] Windows version? The error you are getting is for an obsolete setting In OE for
background compaction. If you are comfortable working with the registry you can try to edit the registry to fix that. Or you can uses Bruce's directions for making a new identity which should not have the problem. If you edit the registry, the key you need to get to is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{guid}\Software\Micro soft\Outlook Express\5.0 and set the key "Background Compaction" to zero. The {guid} is a unique ID. You will have one for each identity that you have in OE.
