Major & Minor X-Axis Settings

I have values for months to be plotted with time along the
X-axis.

I would like to show the axis label every 3 months (ie:
quarters)and have a corresponding solid gridline. I would
also like to show 2 dotted lines for the months inbetween.

I can format the respective gridlines as I want, however I
can't get them to appear in the desired configuration.

How can I achieve this, please?

It's a line chart with a time scale category axis, right?

Double click on the X axis and click on the scale tab. Use these settings:

Minimum: The beginning of the first 3-month period (e.g., 1/1/2003)
Base Unit: Day(s)
Major Unit: 3 Month(s)
Minor Unit: 1 Month(s)

Your major gridline is formatted as a solid line and your minor gridline
as a dotted line, and now they should appear the way you want.

If you don't have the scale options I've shown, right click on the
chart, and select chart options from the pop up menu. Click on the
scale tab, and under category axis, select time scale.

If you can't even get this, you need to right click on the chart, select
chart type from the pop up menu, and choose a line chart, not a scatter
chart.
