Office System 2003 Service Pack 2 released

The full download suggested here worked almost perfectly for me. I was
receiving error code 0x530. And ironically, just like Flowers, I tried to
install 8 previous times. I did most of the items listed in the Knowledge
Base without success during those for previous attempts.
I did get the "unexpected version" error after the installation was
complete, but based on the experience recounted by others in this forum,
rebooted. Despite the error message, the service pack had installed.

BTW, this is one of the few times I've had problems with Microsoft update.

The Local Install Source (LIS) is a good thing to have if you want to be
able to add/remove/repair Office 2003 and don't have the product CD on hand.
Basically the LIS is a hidden directory on the hard drive (MSOCache) that
contains a cached copy of the product CD.

The downside is that there are features of Windows XP that can make the LIS
unusable. For example, two that I am aware of are System Restore and the
Cleanup Wizard. Both of these tend to touch the LIS and can cause it to
become unusable.

In any event, the LISTool can reinstate the LIS on the local drive if you
know there is a chance you will not have access to the product CD or the
orginal installation location on the network.

PS - The switching between two different file sizes in patching is normal
when the LIS is present vs. when it isn't.

I have a question about the SP2 update - more particularly about LIS.

This Wednesday morning when I checked the MS Update site there were 2
updates
available - the KB904631 junk filter and Office 2003 SP2.

I selected both for installation. I was told that the download would be
pretty
big so I went off to do something else and checked back some time later.
The
junk filter had installed but there was a pop-up screen saying that the
SP2
installation had failed.

I tried it again. The installation bar went all the way across the
screen but
after it reached the end the pop-up window appeared saying that the
installation
had failed. I clicked on the red cross on the update history screen and
found
that the error was 0x51F. I dug around and found a page headed "Office
Update
fails to install with error 0x51F. That said to download a file called
LisTool.exe. I ran that and extracted the files LisTool.exe and
LisTool.chm and
then ran LisTool.exe to disable LIS for Office.

I then tried the update again but this time it failed with error
0x8024002c and
a pop-up about not being able to find PRO11N.MSI. I checked both C: and
D:
drives and the file was not to be found on either drive.

I then tried the update again and this time a download started for 136MB
beginning at 45MB (maybe the 34MB mentioned above was wrong). THIS time
the
installation completed satisfactorily.

LIS doesn't seem to have been re-enabled when the update installation
completed
satisfactorily. I ran LisTool and it had empty tick boxes for both
Office and
removing hidden data. I am not sure if I should re-enable one or both of
these
again. My gut instinct is that they should be left not enabled. Would
you
please advise me on this?

I've been trying all morning to get the SP2 installed. First I tried the
smaller package, but it failed with "The update cannot be applied." Then I
tried the larger one and it too failed. I then checked the KB which directed
me to the install logs. Here's what I found in the 0H...msi.log file:

I checked and f54a9.msp does not exist. So I created a dummy f54a9.msp and
retried the install. This time it failed, again, trying to delete 2bd7b7.msp.

As someone suggested, it's sure easier installing updates on a Mac!
