need to uninstall office 2003
Every time I launch OE or IE, the MS Office 2003 installer wants
to run. I don't want Office 2003 on my system. How do I kill the installation from getting triggered when I use OE and IE? I tried uninstalling the Office 2003 .msi manually via "run installer", but XP complains that "the package does not exist", or something like that. I followed most of the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/, and then I deleted all the OFFICE11 directories and most of the references to it in the registry. I also tried the Office Removal Kit, but that didn't work either. Short of trying to located an Office 2003 CD and actually installing 2003 and then uninstalling it, is there a way to stop the installation from getting prompted in the first place? |

I forgot to clarify.. it's Office 2003 Small Business. It was part of a preload on a Dell desktop. It was most likely a trial version, but I am not sure. |

Well if you are trying to manuall uninstall theres no point in using a kb
article which is applicable to Office 2007 This utility may go some way to helping, but it wont remove the 2003 registry entries http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 "Oggy" wrote in message ... Well if you are trying to manuall uninstall theres no point in using a kb article which is applicable to Office 2007 I realized that. But searched for "remove 2003" and the MS site pointed me that article. This utility may go some way to helping, but it wont remove the 2003 registry entries http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 I had tried that at the very start. It made absolutely no difference. All it does, as it describes, is attempt to cleanup the various aspects of installation so that a clean install can proceed. It was only through my many scouring of the registry that I now have a clean prompt to install Office 2003. Before, all I was getting was a "Windows intaller..." pop-up with no other information on what was triggering that or what it was wanting to install. Dell does not seem to provide separate Office 2003 discs. And I am not excited about reinstalling the OS system (+Dell apps and utilities) just to be able to delete O2K3. Meanwhile, I tracked down an Office 2003 S&T Trial DVD that was designed for another computer. I also have an Office 2007 disc that I hope will cooperate. But.. if I could just kill the trigger for the installation pop-up, that would be ideal. |

After Add and Remove Programs, you might want to look into Internet
Explorer, TOOLSOPTIONSPROGRAMS, and make sure that IE is not calling Office for stuff like editing HTML or composing email. In the Add and Remove Programs, you will need to look for pretty obvious stuff, like Office Installer, and variations of it. There is an Installer Clean Up Utility (I don't remember the exact name) that goes in and looks for installs and uninstalls that have gone badly for one reason or another. It sounds as if you have a situation where this utility might help you. These are all pretty basic steps, but it looks as if you are well beyond them. Or, it looks as if you're dangerous to have around a computer. hehehe Sorry, it was funny in my head. You say that you've deleted the Office11 folder. That means that you still have a call in the Registry that is pointing there but there's nothing to find because you deleted it. I'm not sure of the implications (I'm dangerous to have around a computer sometimes, too.) but maybe a Registry search for OFFICE11 might expose the call that isn't working. Office 2007 installation ALWAYS gives you an option to either REMOVE the previous version or retain it. Have you tried that option yet? If you have and if it didn't work then clearly there is no other way but to reinstall the OS and related drivers (which you don't want!!) or ask someone knowledgeable about registry entries to manually delete one of the registry keys. You will need to bite the bullet and do something about it. MVPs are not going to help you here because their knowledge is as good as your local hooker wondering down the high street touting for business! hth |

DL wrote: Since office 2007 hasnt been installed, niether is the op trying to install 2007 what relevence does your response have? Its relevance is to uninstall Office 2003. Office 2007 has the option to do it and I have to say a better option!. All the advise he/she got didn't work including your own so he might as well try one more. Does this answer your question. If not post again and a further attempt will be made to educate you. hth |
