Default Continuous columns

I want to build a document with margin notes. Old word
processors used to give an option of continuous columns
rather than newspaper style. Is there still a way to do
this without a table?

Default Continuous columns

Word does not have a "parallel columns" feature. A table is one option; in
some case marginal frames are a better approach.
