Default Page numbers - Word is confused

I am having trouble with my inserted page numbers because Word is confused about my pages. It thinks my doc is numbered: 2,3,3,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 instead of 1-10. (That's what it shows when I scroll through the doc and what it shows in the lower left box). How on Earth do I fix that?? I don't think it's a section break problem because I don't have any in there. Thanks.

The only way you get numbering like that AFAIK is with section breaks. Turn
on display of non-printing characters and check it out.

Ok. By viewing it like you said, I saw another section break and took it out. Now the page numbers are almost normal, expect that the entire doc still starts on page 2 (so the 10 page doc is numbered 2-11). Any idea of how to change that?

View the Header and Footers
Click on the button to format page numbers on the toolbar and tell it to
start with page 1.
