Default Protect mailmerge document

Is there a way to protect a mailmerge document but still allow users to
populate the mailmerge fields? We want them to be able to populate the
mailmerge fields only and not be able to change any other part of the
document. Thank you.

there's nothing built-into Word that will let you do this (just insert
mergefields). If we're talking Word 2003, you might be able to program a
macro that will let the user position the IP, then click a button. The
macro would take care of removing protection, inserting the field, then
reprotecting. That's the only possibility I can imagine, though.
