Default category x axis labels

Im using excel 2000 and am trying to create a scatter chart where it
shows my x axis labels rather than just numbers.

I dont see any options for category x axis labels ?
Ive already added a ' in front of the 1st column text which are the x
axis labels, and i also formatted them as text.
All i have are 2 columns of data where the 1st column includes the x
labels and the 2nd column are the values.

I know there is a simple solution , but i cant figure it out ?
Thanks
scott

Would using a line chart instead of a scatter chart work for you? -Marise

Simple solution for a new chart:

Put the labels in the first column, the values in the second (and more
columns for multiple series). Leave a blank cell above the labels, and a
series name above the second. The data looks like this:

The Values
Category 1 15
Category 2 23
Category 3 24
etc.

Select the entire range, including the column of labels and row of
series name(s). Make the chart, using the series in columns option on
step 2 of the chart wizard, and it should be set up the way you want.

To fix an existing chart:

Right click the chart, choose Source Data from the popup menu, and click
on the Series tab. Select the first series from the list, click in the
box that says Categories (or X values, depending on the chart type), and
choose the range you want with your mouse.
