Reinstalling my Dutch language pack and unknown errors
I needed to reinstall my Vista (yes I needed a clean install). After the
install I started to reinstall my Office 2007. Finally it is the turn for my official (!) Dutch LP for my English Office. Now I had this once before but could not fathom that yet again I would stumble upon the unknown activation error in the Digital River dialog, when trying to activate. For any of you trying to provide solutions, first time around when this happened I already have tried each and every single solution, to no avail. In the end I needed a new unlock code. After a lot (and I do mean a lot!) of e-mails I finally got an unlock code. To my dismay I discovered that this (unlock) code does not work anymore. I am guessing it expires. Just like my original language pack key apparently expired. Currently I am awaiting an answer to an e-mail I (again) sent but it does make me wonder: Does this mean that each time I reinstall I am going to have this problem? That is simply extremely customer unfriendly (and I am putting it mildly). And yes I know Digital River is the company rolling out the LP's, but to me as an end customer that is irrelevant. After all I am using Microsoft, not Digital River Office. In the end it baffles me completely that Microsoft actually uses this company since: - The window to install activate is one of the most user unfriendly dialogs, riddled with usability errors. In fact as a usability specialist I give workshops and I use this dialog to demonstrate how wrong you can get it. - The surest way of frustrating your client is by returning the message: unknown error. If you don’t know it, how on earth should I! - The dialog window is riddled with translation errors. Not only are there erroneous translations from English to Dutch, but part of the text is not even in Dutch but in German. - Getting in touch with Digital River is as hard as getting money back from your tax. Actually the latter is easier. Going back to wait for the e-mail with (hopefully) my new unlock code (or freischaltcode as the window says, not Dutch, so a good thing I speak German too), I leave you all. And hopefully you all will get it right next time, hence this post. |
