Error Message

I loaded an Excel file (.xls) on another computer. The file will open
correctly from within Excel 97 but produces an error message if opened
by double clicking the file (via shortcut), which is the preferred method
..
When Excel starts and opens the file an error message appears:

"A document with the name [file name given] is already open. You cannot
open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in
different folders. To open the second document, either close the
document that is currently open, or rename one of the documents."

On clicking the OK button the file opens correctly and there is only one
workbook open.

It does not matter what the name of the file or whether it had
previously been opened, the same message appears.

Why does this happen and how do I stop this message?

Try the usual fixes for this problem.

ToolsOptionsGeneral uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1 ) StartRun "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)OK.
2) StartRun "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case StartRun "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.

Gord, I found the "Ignore other Applications" unchecked so I
unregistered then reregister and that fixed the problem.
