Default Highlighted Table of contents and index

All of sudden my table of contents, index and page number footers are
highlighted gray. This occurs in all versions of the file, including one I
tried to salvage from an outlook attachment. The only thing I know I have
done is save a copy of the document as a web page. I am using Word 2000.

All the items you mention are fields. I think the shading is a result of
having Tools Options View tab "Field shading" set to "Always". If that
is the case, you can change the setting to one of the other options. However,
note that the gray shading is only displayed on the screen, it does not print.

Personally, I find it useful to have the shading set to "Always" so that
users do not by mistake edit text that is part of a field (such edits will be
gone when the field is updated).
