Please define what you call the "main" e-mail folder, and is it gone, or
just the messages? -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA "Teriel9" wrote in message ... I have just opened my Outlook Express and notice that my main email folder has disappeared, how can I get it back please. Thanks Teriel9 |

Lost email folder
Hi Bruce, Many thanks for your prompt response, I have a number of folders
which messages are directed to by message rules, for some reason one of them, the folder and all the emails have gone. I looked in the Recycle bin but there was nothing there. Is there any where I can look where the folder info is stored Thanks again Teriel9 "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... Lost email folder
First, make sure it isn't in Deleted Items. If not, see if the dbx file for
the folder still exists in the message store and manually restore it as follows. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. In the message store in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the missing folder and drag it to the Desktop at the top of the folder tree. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on your Desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. (You must do this). Go back to Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop to the OE store folder that you clicked on to reveal the .dbx files. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes. *Note* If you have moved the Outlook Express store folder from it's default location on drive C to another drive, drag the dbx file to a location on that drive and not the Desktop. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA "Teriel9" wrote in message ... Lost email folder
Hi Bruce,
Many thanks for your help but the "Teriel Consultants.dbx" file is not in that position. I did a search for *.dbx and found 159 files but this was not among them. Lost email folder
You're welcome. You could try one of these tools. If you have compacted
since the folder went missing, only DBXpress has a chance of retrieving the messages. Macallan Outlook Express Extraction: http://www.insideoe.com/resources/tools.htm#macallan DBXtract: http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx DBXpress: {much faster for large files} http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx If you adhere to the following, especially backing up OE daily and before compacting, this will be less likely to happen, and easier to fix if it does, in the future. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption. Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095 After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often.
