Outlook express generates wbk files in temp folder!
If I waited for a month before cleaning these files out, I would end up
waiting literally minutes any time I needed to see a dialog box which listed files (Open or Save) or opened Windows Explorer to see a directory listing (and yes, things speed up immediately when they are deleted). I thought that the definition of temporary files or a temporary folder was just that...something a program needed only temporarily and which did not need to persist. IMO (and I am a programmer) any program worth it's salt should clean up after itself like any responsible adult if it generates temporary files and/or directories. It's obvious that these files aren't critical to have around as the only advice that is seemingly given is to "just delete them." So why doesn't the MS program that creates them delete them on closing the program or when they are no longer needed? "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... Outlook express generates wbk files in temp folder!
I have searched all over the Internet for a remedy to this situation. I KNOW
that this problem started after I intalled IE8! I KNOW that it is Outlook Express that is generating these files because I have BOTH OE and Win Temp windows open at once and can literally SEE two or three of these files (not just one!) being created every single time I reply, save, delete, transfer an e-mail to another folder or send an e-mail! I now just delete them at regular intervals throughout the day, (a real chore and feel it's just several more jobs that need to be done in the name of 'Good Housekeeping' on my PC!) I really cannot see why, as there are so many complaints about this, Microsoft can't come up with a 'Fix' for it! I have rread recently of a suggestion that there may be a connection to a file in the Adobe Reader or Acrobat programs (LogTransport2.exe) but I feel this just complicates the issue, as I have had Adobe Reader for years and never had a problem before installing IE8! Outlook express generates wbk files in temp folder!
No of course not! I meant I have used this program for years. Of course it's
been updated! It's V.9 now. I meant that I haven't had a problem with Adobe before, apart from, as you say, it's always trying to update itself! I've taken its entry out of my startup items now and that does help. However, most of the time, after I've used the program, I find the entry back in the startup again! Anyway, no, I don't think it's Adobe at all. I've been monitoring this carefully all morning now and find that every time I click on an e-mail to read it, two of these files are created in Win Temp. Also, if I click on one of my folders in OE, the same thing happens. In fact, I can't really do much of anything in OE without two files being created in Win Temp! One thing I have noticed however, is when I close down OE, some of the latterly created files disappear. There are always some of the earlier ones from my OE session remaining though. Anyway, at least these files can be deleted immediately; seemingly without any ill effects! "Ron Sommer" wrote: Are you saying that you have used Adobe Reader for years and have never updated it? Outlook express generates wbk files in temp folder!
When you were running IE7 and earlier, those same files (one for every
message and attachment you opened & every time you opened it) were created in a hidden subfolder of Temporary Internet Files folder. With IE8 installed, they're now in %windows%\TEMP folder. When you were running IE7 and earlier, the files were subject to the Temporary Internet Files limit you chose he IE Tools | Internet Options | General | Browsing History (or Temporary Internet Files in IE6) | Settings | Disk space to use. As such, they were deleted on a LIFO-basis when you exceeded the limit. Or they were deleted when you chose to use the 'Delete Temporary Internet Files' function. With IE8 installed, you'll need to delete them manually or via Disk Cleanup after rebooting. MS is not going to change this. Why? My guess is that IE8 was developed primarily with Windows 7 in mind (as IE7 was developed with Vista in mind). Since Win7 doesn't include any default Mail Client (not OE, not Windows Mail, not Windows Live Mail) tied to IE8, the files are saved elsewhere. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Daisy Bell wrote: I have searched all over the Internet for a remedy to this situation.
