Default Why the stumbling block when I try to Paste ?

Got it.
I'll probably leave the add-ins and try to remember to open Word before I
copy.
Thanks.

Program Files also contains a separate folder titled "Microsoft

This is a known issue when you have the Works add-in for Word

If it has anything to do with Clipboard, is this related:

Yes, plug-ins or add-ins or macros are the usual causes of the
behavior
you're experiencing. Most people don't have any problems copying
stuff from other applications before Word is open, then opening
Word and pasting the stuff into Word.

You

add-in overwrites what you copied to the clipboard with its own

and then possibly clears the clipboard when it is done.

The Paste option in Edit is greyed out.

Often I copy a paragraph from a website, then open Word, only
to have to go back to the web page and recopy after Word 2002
has opened. Only then does the paste option appear. This
did not happened with my earlier version of Word.

Does anyone know of an option to avoid this difficulty ?

If you are running Word freestanding (not starting it from the Works Task
Launcher), you really would be best advised to uninstall the Microsoft Works
Suite Add-in for Word (through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs).
Clearing the Clipboard and overpopulating menus are only a couple of its
nasty habits. It's also known to dirty Normal.dot and prompt you to save it
every time you close Word (unless you don't have Word set to prompt you, in
which case it saves Normal.dot without asking), and it is also probably the
culprit responsible for saving a document as Normal.dot, with the expected
dire results. You do *not* need the add-in, and you will not lose any
functionality in Works or Word by uninstalling it except the ability to
start Word from Works, to use the Word templates supplied with Works, and to
use a Works database as a mail merge data source or start a Word merge from
within Works.

As you wish, but the add-in is notoriously bug laden and does not do
anything useful apart from allowing you to merge from Works data and there
are ways around this. I suggest you uninstall it.

Uninstalling should take about a minute; I doubt if you'll even be asked for
the CD.
