Report format problem

I've got a reasonably straighforward report. It's A4 Portrait and
comprises a report header, a group header and a detail section.
Whenever I try to view it in print preview it keeps on telling me that

"The section width is greater that the page width, and there are no
items in the additional space, so some pages may be blank. For
example, the report width may be wider than the page width".

Well, yes I am getting blank pages but I don't see why. The report
width is set at 17cm. What other section widths should I be looking
for to reset? None of the header, footer or detail sections seem to
have a width property for me to edit. None of the text boxes in the
report are anything like 17cms wide.

I'm puzzled.

Open your report in design view and you should see that at the right-hand edge
of the report sections the background color changes from white to gray. Access
considers ALL of the white area as "what to print". It doesn't matter if all of
your controls are further over to the left. It is this white area that has to
be sized to fit between your margins.

Generally you can grab that right edge and drag it to the left until it "hits"
your right-most object and it will solve the problem. If you find that you
can't drag it as far to the left as you think you should be able to then you
have an object that is obstructing you. Often a horizontal line tucked in close
to a section divider can be wider than you want and not easy to see.

Thanks. Dragging the white area in to the left has fixed the problem.

What I hadn't realised was that Access was giving me margins of 2.49 cm
on each side of the report over and above the white area in design view.
Presumably I could also have fixed the problem by going to FilePage
Setup and editing the margins there since I'd already got a more than
adequate right-hand margin on the white design grid.

Generally you are better off having your left-most objects at the extreme
left side of your report design with no white space to the left of them,
eliminating all white space to the right of your right-most objects, and
using the margin settings in Page Setup to control white space to the left
and right of your actual output.

To do otherwise will force you to use smaller margin settings in Page Setup
and you might encounter some printers that will not allow a setting small
enough to accommodate your report.
