Default Monster File Size Increase

I created a small one page text document which takes up about 22KB. Then I
inserted a signature by clicking Insert | Picture| From File. The inserted
signature file is a .JPG of about 180KB. But the insertion causes the text
file + picture to grow to over 3MB. Why? And is there a way to avoid this
growth?

Word is very inefficient in incorporating embedded graphics. A 180K .jpg is
quite high resolution (or a very large signature). Can you insert the
signature as a link instead?

I used the image resizer powertoy right click and shrank the file size from
180K to 10K. The resulting embed was much more reasonable 197K. A link
wouldn't have worked, as i was e-mailing the document.
