Default Publisher can't open files...

Conditions for the PC mentioned below:
O/S: Wxp Pro - total updated.
Office: Of2k - total updated.
******

Situation:
I have received e-mails with publisher-files attached. When I try to open
the files, my Publisher comes up with the error-message (translated from
danish to english): "Publisher can't open files, which are created in another
version of Publisher."
When I look in the properties of the files, I can see the author's name, but
not the version of the publisher, with which the files are created, or the
Publisher-format of the files. (It should have been a good feature, if the
Publisher program as default hat set this information, every time a file was
created).
Since I assume, that the Publisher versions are backwards compatible, the
received publisher files are supposed to be of newer art.
******

I am not in the mood to buy a new version of the Publisher now.

The two questions:
1. Can it really be true, that Microsoft not offer their customer a
conversion tool, when Microsoft makes new formats to Publisher?
2. Can somebody tell me an alternative way to open or convert the mentioned
files?

Thank You very much.

The conversion tool is call an upgrade. I know, that's not the answer you
wanted but........

As for how to open that file, you can either ask the originators of the
files to do a Save As Pub 2000 or, if it's just a one time thing, you may
send them to me and I'll send them back as a Pub 2000 file. Please bear in
mind that something *could* be lost in the translation.

If you want to accept my offer, you are welcome to send the files to jl dot
paules at gmail dot com.
