Styles

I would like to be able to set up styles and shotcut key within Word to make
life a bit quicker, but everytime I do so they disappear shortly afterwards
(next day)- I am assuming that this is related something wiping my
preferences or changes to the normal template every so often as I don't have
this probelm at home: is there any way to turn this off?

I assume this is a company machine on a network. If the IT nazis at work
reset normal.dot at log-in, there's not a lot you can do. You need to chat
with them and tell them to desist.

What if you saved your own Normal.dot to a floppy (or any other removable
media), then copy it back into place every morning?
