Default Folder compacting interrupted

The Status bar also gives a message count and tells when a view is applied.

Good thought Ron. The "Retrieving Posts" display. It already appears on my
Status Bar. That's something worth checking after restarting Outlook
Express. Of course that involves persuading users, who like to simplify
windows, to display the Status Bar. I find the Status bar useful because
the Online/ Offline button is quicker than using File, Work Offline / Work
Online but the most users do not read Offline as I do.

Double clicking Working online on the Status bar will make OE go
offline. To the right of Working Online is the status of the Send /
Receive operation. You will see if OE is sending or receiving when
you prepare to go offline.

The way to eliminate the "In Use" issue is to close Outlook Express
if it is open and then restart Outlook Express. This ensures that
previously uncompleted operations have stopped. If you have Send and
Receive at Start Up checked you have to be certain the operation has
completed before you start compacting. This could be an explanation
for your particular complaint. Placing the cursor on Local Folders (
Bruce likes Outlook Express ) seems to eliminate getting an "In use"
response for folders.dbx. Compacting offline discourages
interuptions by operations initiated during the compacting process.

Message count yes.

View applied was not something I was aware of. I only use "Show all
messages" when it does not appear. I cannot see how it is helpful as it
gives no indication as to which of the three options has been selected.

I read offline and use Ctrl+H to toggle between Show Replies to my
messages and Group messages by Conversation. In newsgroups all my posts
are coloured red using a Message Rule. I never mark messages as read so
it is easy to see what has been read. I rarely use the Watch option. I
always download bodies. I know my approach is not one that is commonly
used.
