Default Can't shrink 2 gig pst file

I've been trying to archive my main pst file but cannot get it to go any
smaller. I've checked all the folders and there is no reason it should be 2.4
gig in size. I have no idea where the space is being used up. Can I make sure
I'm archiving my default pst file correctly? Do I just archive the "personal
folders"? I assume I do as that's the huge one. I've archived it to the first
of this month and yet its huge.

Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have archive properly configured? How large is the archive pst? Did
you compact the pst after archiving? (right click on the top level, choose
properties, advanced button then compact now.)

Hey Diane,

My archive is set like my others which work fine so it should be correct. (I
have several data files.) The archive file is small. 2 meg after I archive.
And I've compressed the main file itself. Still 2.1 gig. I just can't figure
out where its using up that much space. like I said ive looked in all the
folders and there is not much in them. Are there things in the main default
pst file I'm missing possibly?

Thanks for the input!
Nancy

What version of outlook created the pst? If the pst is an ansi pst and is
oversized, archiving will not work until you repair the pst.

It was created in 2003. But I upgraded to 2007. I'm not sure, from that link
you sent, if that would cause my problem or not. I'm a bit nervous to use
the PST2GB tool as it says it truncates the date...

Default Found Workaround

Interestingly when i view the folder properties and view file size it was
like 60 mg. Yet the pst itself was 2.1 gig. I decided to create a new default
pst file and import the items from my 2.1 gig into it. Worked like a charm.
The files is now 60 meg. I still have NO idea where the 2 gig was coming from
or what was making it that large. Doesn't make any sense. But in any case
I've got it back to normal size.

Thanks for the input!

Custom forms and other hidden items can enlarge it, although not usually by
2 GB. Thanks for letting us know.
