Office 2003 WTH does this mean?

It's just started doing this. When I open a word doc a message appears that
says:- "This document could not be registered - it will not be possible to
link to other documents. On clicking the "OK" the message disappears. The
problem is, copy and paste on the whole PC is disabled. If I try to copy
the whole document to another location, paste is greyed out. But it doesn't
just apply to word or even microsoft progs but everything. I can't then
copy say a Corel image . Weird. Any pointers gratefully received
