Default Where did my 'Contacts' list go??

Very strange situation here.. following various automatic updates I can no
longer see the names in the 'Contacts' list. All it says is there are no
contacts. However, my address book is fine and when I 'Add a Contact' it does
not appear in the 'Contacts' view pane but is added to the address book.
Is there something I've inadvertantly done to remove the contact names (the
Contacts pane is visible). I've even tried 'Importing' the address book from
Outlook (the contacts are all visible in Outlook) but even though it does
import and the message says import successful there are still no names in the
Contact pane.
Interestingly enough, when I compose a message using a name from the
contacts list the full e-mail address autocompletes so OE must be referencing
this from somewhere.
I've even tried restoring to an earlier date but that didn't restore the list.
Any clues as to how I can see the 'Contacts' list?
