Outlook express generates wbk files in temp folder!
If I waited for a month before cleaning these files out, I would end up
waiting literally minutes any time I needed to see a dialog box which listed files (Open or Save) or opened Windows Explorer to see a directory listing (and yes, things speed up immediately when they are deleted). I thought that the definition of temporary files or a temporary folder was just that...something a program needed only temporarily and which did not need to persist. IMO (and I am a programmer) any program worth it's salt should clean up after itself like any responsible adult if it generates temporary files and/or directories. It's obvious that these files aren't critical to have around as the only advice that is seemingly given is to "just delete them." So why doesn't the MS program that creates them delete them on closing the program or when they are no longer needed? "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... [Please don't kill the messenger.] Run Disk Cleanup once a month then or delete the contents of the folder manually. Please note that not all IE8 users are seeing this. No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage (only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December 2009. By placing them in the Users temp area, they slow down everything! "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... Why now? You installed IE8. With IE6 or IE7, OE (and Windows Live Mail) puts those files in the Temporary Internet Files (TIF). It isn't readily apparent that the files are there since they don't show up with the common ways of looking at the TIF. Paste the following into Windows Explorer to see them %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ Those files stay in the TIF until you manually clear the TIF including offline content or possibly using some automated TIF clearing utilities. With IE8, OE seems unable to use the TIF and so they go in the Windows temp folder. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Kevin" wrote in message ... Outlook Express has started leaving loads of wbk files in the XP temp folder everytime I look at saved emails or new emails that contain either pictues, gifs ,jpg or HTML format. It never used to do it so why now? Disk cleanup does NOT delete them. |
