Default what's my problem here?

Got an "all of a sudden" problem to seek help with. Running IE6 and OE in
WinXP(h).

This has been happening the last several days:

A. When trying to send outgoing email, it looks like a normal send until
the bar reaches the right side of the window. Then, I get an error notice
that there was a problem. But, no error detail available in the ERROR
windowpane.

B. Copy of the folder in the SENT file is not there---normal indication
your sent emails have actually gone out.

C. I later find that the outgoing email did in fact go out, even though I
have no SENT folder copy, and still have the original in my OUTGOING folder.

D. This doesn't happen on all outgoing messages, but randomly with some.

What gives? Is this a me problem or a server problem???

You could have a corrupt outbox or sent items folder?

First thing, disable any mail scanning options in your Anti Virus software,
it serves no purpose and causes this type of problem. Also disable any
anti-spam software.

If that does not solve the problem then get back to the same thread please?

1. If there's anything you want to keep in Sent Items folder, move it to
another local folder created for this purpose.

2. Tools Options Maintenance Store folder will reveal the location of
your current Identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). Write it down.

[In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show
Hidden Files and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options
View.]

3. Close OE. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store, find and delete
Outbox.dbx and Sent Items.dbx.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss
in the futu
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Thanks. I turned my email a/v scanner off and it seems that's fixed the
problem.

Good, thank you for the feedback.

If the problem returns?

PA Bear provided you with the next steps & some good 'house keeping' advice
in this thread.

Nope. I'm wrong. Still broke. Just did it again a couple times. And,
I've cleaned stuff up as PA Bear adivses.

I'm wondering if it's a server problem. Nothing changed in my pc (that I
know of). Might spend some time this pm with my ISP tech support group.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

Your current Identity may have been damaged by the AV app's email scanning,
especially likely if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your
accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity).
Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File Identities Manage Identities).

Woof! Just got off the phone from a two hour conversation with my
Bellsouth tech support rep. We went through some of the things PA Bear had
me do, and other things in addition. Finally, he said: "you've got a
problem for Microsoft". I said "do you mean it's a software problem?"
The answer was yes.

Now I've got to think about this for a bit. I may take my pc to a shop
close by tomorrow that gives one day service.

Why would you consult your ISP about an OE problem?

Did you try creating a new identity?

Thanks much for the ideas. Yes to the new identity. My ISP is very good
about tech support for anything to do with a pc. Guess it's a marketing
thing, maybe. To the shop in the morning with this wretched thing.
