Default Outlook XP (2002) will not function

I've had Office 2000 installed on my home computer for a couple of months,
and have been using Outlook for the calendar/reminder/notes etc..
I do NOT use it for my e-mail.
I prefer OE for that, because I spend time daily on USENET newgroups, and
find it more convenient to handle all my daily communication with one
application.

I recently purchased Office XP (2002), and am having major frustration with
trying to get that version of Outlook installed and running.

First, when I try to install it, instead of asking if I want to upgrade the
older version (which it would make sense to upgrade it and transfer all my
calendar files etc.), it insists I have to completely remove the older
version first.
Ok fine, I remove the older version, and install the new one. But the new
one won't function at all.

When I start the program, I get an error message which says "Unable to
open your default e-mail folders. The DLL for the information service could
not be found. MAPI was unable to load the information service PSTPRX.DLL. Be
sure the service is correctly installed and configured."
When I click on "OK", I then get a second error message, which reads:
"Would you like to open your default File System folder instead?". If I
click "no", the program closes.
If I click "yes", it opens "My Computer", and none of the other Outlook
features (Calender, Notes, etc.) will function; if I click on one of them,
again I get the error message "Unable to display the folder. Microsoft
Outlook could not access the specified folder location. The .DLL file for
the information service could not be found. MAPI was unable to load the
information service PSTPRX.DLL. Be sure the service is correctly installed
and configured."

I saw the advice to another poster to go to "Mail" in the Control Panel
and remove any MS Exchange account; there is no such account listed. I tried
setting up a fake POP3 account (again, I DO NOT want to set up my real
e-mail account with Outlook), but that didn't help.

Any way to get the program functioning WITHOUT setting it up for my e-mail?

Updating - program will not start AT ALL on second try; I just get the
error message about PSTPRX.Dll.

Never mind - I figured it out, poking about in the Mail settings in the
Control Panel; there were two "profiles" set up, and choosing the other one
not only got Outlook running normally, but caused all my old calendar
entries etc. to show up in it.
