Default Endnote numbering problem

I imported into Word 2007 a RTF document that already had endnotes. When I
try to add new endnotes to the Word doc, the endnote numbering begins at 1
(when it should be at, say, 32). Is there a way to make the Word doc reorder
the endnote numbers sequentially?

True endnotes do renumber automatically. I suspect that someone has typed in
the numbers you are seeing.
