Default Office viewer for Mac

We just bought our daughter a Macbook. Have heard they will open Windows
Office documents from 07 and Vista but not older than that. Curious if this
is true.
If true are there any downloads which allow Mac to view Windows Office
documents from previous versions, ie: '03, XP, etc. ~ Dan

If she has Office for Mac, then she doesn't need a viewer. Or do you mean
she does not have Office at all?

We bought the Mac version of Office, however the issue we're trying to
address is if someone sends her a document from an older version of Windows
Office, ie: '03 or XP. The understanding we have is the Mac Office will only
open Windows Office documents from '07 and Vista, nothing older. If true,
hence the need for the download I mentioned in the previous post. ~ Dan

I really doubt that. I don't do Macs but the Windows version will read
documents that are several versions old. I suspect Mac will too - I'd even
be willing to bet money on that. But if you want to be sure, post your
question in the Offive for Mac newsgroup.

Not true.

Windows 7 and Vista are operating systems, like the various versions of MacOS
(Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc).

Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc are PROGRAMS that run under these operating
systems.

As long as you have compatible versions of the PROGRAMS, it doesn't really
matter what operating system version you have, or what version the files were
created under.

If you have Mac Office 2008, you should be able to open documents created in
any prior version of Office, at least back to Office 97/98, regardless of what
operating system, Mac or PC, the file was created in.

As mentioned, Office for Mac should open any previous version of a document.
I would almost say that if you cannot open previous versions of files with
Office for Mac, then it might be a bad install. If you are still having
problems, try to use Textedit.app. It's located in the Applications folder on
the Mac (which can be accessed by the shortcut Command-Shift-A). That should
open a .doc file and then save it as a different version (ie: .docx, etc).
