Default Copy / Paste issue between publications... ???

I am a very active computer user with a fair amount of knowledge.

I replaced a PC w/ a new Dell and have publisher 2000 installed on it. I
used to be able to copy and paste between publications, now I copy and when I
attempt to paste to the new publication nothing happens - any ideas?

I have detect and repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled - nothing works. I
copy between applications almost hourly let alone daily and I use this cut
and paste between publications frequently. The work around is time consuming
at best - anyone else run into this and have suggestions how to fix???

Windows XP Professional 2002 w/ SP2. All Microsoft Update (windows updates)
and Microsoft Office Updates have been done, even doing custom nothing else
shows available or due.

I can copy in publisher and paste in Word or as an image in other graphics
programs. I can copy in one instance of publisher and it holds in the
clipboard, then
in the next instance of publisher I can right click or Edit / Paste or Paste
Special and it looks like it is going to paste but nothing shows up. Then the
option to paste again becomes unavailable.

I am using Microsoft Office 2000 and Publisher 2000. Publisher was bought
seperate from Office.

I have never seen this before nor from what I have read has anyone else.

You can drag and drop between publications.

It is also worth mentioning I can copy and paste to my hearts content in a
single instance of publisher or single publication but multiple publications
it fails.

This PC came with Office 2003 demo pre-loaded and it was uninstalled using
control panel.

I am now also having this on one of my systems. I can narrow it down a
bit for you.

Last Tuesday (10/10) all was running fine. I then installed on
Wednesday evening:
- Windows XP maintenance for October
- Office 2000 maintenance (at least 1, definately 2, or maybe 3 months)
8 pieces of maint went on 1 or more definately hit Publisher (I don't
have the list in front of me)

Today, the user attempted to copy/paste from one Publisher 2000 file to
the other and it failed. It has worked for years.

System is XP SP2 plus all maintenance, Office 2000 plus all
maintenance.

Any ideas?
Any ideas of what to try?
TIA

More info:
I tried in now on multiple PCs.....
When I copy from one pub file....
Go to the target doc...
If I right-mouse click 'Paste' is available, the FIRST time,,,
If I use the menu bar under Edit, Paste is never available.
I have narrowed it down to the application of maintenance to Office or
XP, but most likely Office,
I have narrowed it down to one of just a few pieces of maintenance,,,

The clipboard is a Windows controlled function. If you open the clipboard
manually can you see the copied data?
The clipbrd.exe is in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Drag the icon to the
desktop and create a shortcut.
You need to ask about clipboard issues in a Windows newsgroup.

I simply don't know what to tell you. I can copy/paste from a Publisher file to
a Publisher file over and over with no problem. You might try a disk clean-up.
Don't delete Office setup files.

Can you drag and drop between your Publisher files?
Do a repair from the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Office
2000, click change, repair.

Unfortunately, I have tried that w/ no success. I completely uninstalled
office and publisher, deleted the office folder, etc. Reinstalled - no luck.
Did the detect and repair - no luck.

Seems to me from reading other peoples messages, especially where this
problem is also present in word that a recent security update wasn't tested
enough and might have caused this problem.
