Default Inserting a LINK field-what's the /f switch?

When I insert a LINK field, there is a switch ("/f") which,
accompanied by a number param, sets some kind of
formatting. But I can find absolutely NO DISCUSSION of what
the values for that param should be, and what effect it has
in the "master" document.

Could someone please direct me to a discussion of that
parameter?

Thanks!

Word help on Link Field explains the switches and the numbers.

Yes and no. The parameters for the "/f" switch are not
explained. All that's said is "formats according to the
parameter". That's a worthless explanantion.

It says:

\f
Causes the linked object to update its formatting in a particular way,
according to one of the following parameters.

0 Maintain the formatting of the source file
1 Not supported
2 Match the formatting of the destination document
3 Not supported
4 Maintain the formatting of the source file, if the source file
is an
Excel workbook
5 Match the formatting of the destination document, if the source
file
is an Excel workbook
